Moshe returns to Sighet (no exact date given) and shares the horrors he witnessed in the concentration camps. No one believed him. Life returned to normal; 1943 passed.

German defeat certain
Spring 1944 (no exact date given) - News on the Russian front is that the Germans are sure to be defeated. Yet, 3 days later, the Germans march into Sighet.

Events during Passover
Jewish Passover begins on April 8th; April 14th, the Germans arrest Jewish leaders. Within 3 days, Jews must wear yellow stars. Then ghettos were established.

Deportation
The Saturday before Penecost (occurs 50 days after Passover), news of deportation reaches the ghettos. Elie and his family are in the second wave of the deportatio, on a Tuesday.

Birkenau

Elie's Father Dies
During the night of Jan 28th into Jan 29th, Elie's father dies. He had received violent blows to the head with a truncheon from an officer during the day on the 28th as he begged Elie for some water.

American troops arrive at the gates of Buchenwald; the camp is liberate.
