Elie and his family move from their home to a smaller ghetto, they move into the house of another family.

Vladek and Anja have gone into hiding in Sosnowiec, first staying with a Polish woman, Mrs. Kowka, then on the farm of Mrs. Motonowa.

Elie adn his family are deported from the ghetto to Aushwitz, where him and his father are separated from the rest of his family.

Elie's foot is in bad condition and is very sewlled. Elie must have it operated on in the Aushwitz infirmary.
