    The Norse Arrive

    The Norse Arrive
    <a href='' >Nelson Literacy book</a>The Norse arrived at around the year 1100.They also called them self Vikings.They came from Newfoundland and Labrador,Greenland.They builded a settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows,Newfoundland.At first the Norse traded with a group called the Beothuk,but soon the two group went into battle with each other.The Norse abandoned their settlement and left Newfoundland.

    Cabot lands on North America
    <a href='' >Nelson Literacy book</a>In 1497 a Italian explor named John Cabot landed somewhere on the North American coast. He had been sent by his king (Henry VII) because to find a passage to Asia. It's was not clear that whether Cabot reached Newfoundland or Labrador or Cape Breton Island. Even that he did not made contact with the first nations in North America he still claimed their land in the name of the King Of England.

Fishers from Europe were travelling to North America. They traded with the first nations people. They traded European goods for their fur.

    Cartier Explores Eastern Canada
    <a href='' >Nelson Literacy book</a>Around 1534 a French explorer named Jacques Cartier set out to find a route across North America to the Pacific Ocean. He did this because to find a faster way to sent trading ships ot Asia. On his first voyage,Cartier explored the Gulf of the St.Lawrence. During his travels he made contact with two first nations groups, the Mi'kmaq and the Haudenosaunee(Iroquois). Cartier found out that the land was rich in natural resources. So he put up a large France flag to claim the land for France.

When the King of France heard about their stories about the riches of Canada,he allowed him to return to Canada the next year. In 1535,Cartier sailed up the St.Lawrence River to Stadacona(which we call Quebec City). Continuing along the river he reached a village called Hochelage(Montreal). He planed to force 9 of the Haudenosaunee but died while they were in France.

    <a href='' >Nelson Literacy book</a>Samuel de Champlain hoped to find a passage to Asia. In 1603 he sailed to North America and traved up the St. Lawrence River. When he did not find a route to Asia he returned to France in 1604 with 80 French setters.In sping 1605,Champlain helped to found Port Royal (Nova Scotia).The settlers and French fishers traded metal goods with the Mi'kmaq ,who had beaver fur.In 1608,Champlain built a fort in what is now Quebec City.This fort was the centre of the fur trade.

    In 1607, Henry Hudson was hired to to find a route to Asia.In 1607 Henry sailed off.They reached the east coast of Greenland on June 14,coasting it northward until the 22nd.In 1609, Hudson was chosen by the Dutch East India Company, from Holland, to find an easterly passage to Asia.In 1610, Hudson went back for another voyage, this time under the English flag and reaching Iceland on May 11.
