    Building Sherwood- Bates
    Bates is almost complete! W. H. Deitrick’s Sherwood-Bates Elementary School of 1950 has a one-story classroom wing and a two-story cafeteria and library wing that is built into a hillside, with ribbons of metal casement windows and a glass curtain wall in the cafeteria. The Deitrick firm designed Daniels Junior High School next door in 1951, which has a two-story classroom wing set at right angles to a projecting auditorium, with metal ribbon windows and large glazed wall areas.

    Sherwood-Bates Elementary School opens to Raleigh's baby boomers. The school was named after Mary Bates Sherwood (born 1866), a respected principal at Wiley Elementary School, and her sister Grace Bates (born 1862), Miss Grace, a beloved first grade teacher at Wiley. Both both served from 1909 to 1942 and died days apart in 1950. They each taught for more than 50 years.

    Daniels Junior High Opens
    Daniels Junior High opens to Raleigh baby boomers with grades seven to nine and is named in honor of Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy from 1913 to 1921 (WW1).The Blue Jackets are born. A Blue Jacket is slang for a sailor and becomes the mascot of Daniels. Josephus was the Ambassador to Mexico from 1933-1941. The Daniels family owned and editied the News and Observer newspaper from 1891 -1995. "Cup of Joe", free coffee from Josephus, is legend in the Navy due to prohibition.

    Trailblazers in Wake County (4:20) The Daniels Five included Gloria Hunter, Parnel Jones, Larry Manuel, Rebecca Bryant and Anna Morgan. They were the first to integrate a middle school.

    The Blue Jacket becomes our confused mascot.
    A yellow jacket mascot insect turns blue and is painted on our gym floor. We later give our Blue Jacket mascot a sailor hat.
  • Raleigh City Schools merges with Wake County Schools.

    Community leaders saw the need to merge the systems to save money and to continue to integrate the schools by bussing. All the growth was occuring in the county system, and the city was losing students.
  • A new high school is built.

    A new high school is built.
    Athens Drive High School opens in 1978. It is the first high school built since the merger and the first to be named after a location and not a person. Naming schools after people became too controversial.
  • Daniels Serves ALL 7th, 8th, and 9th grade ESL students in the county.

    Daniels becomes the first (ESL) junior high in the county under principal Michael Jordan with Hanna Ridgeway as the head of this program.. Daniels also teaches its last group of ninth graders; it will become a middle school and be the first to implement teaming of students and teachers.
  • Sherwood-Bates Elementary closes.

    Due to underenrollment, Sherwood-Bates closes its doors to become part of Daniels. Sixth grade centers also close in Wake County. Daniels incorporates sixth grade on the back halls with a new principal, Dave Stipe. Daniels begins teaming. Ninth grade is now housed at Broughton.
  • Daniels Science and Math Magnet School

    Daniels Science and Math Magnet School
    Principal Peggy Holliday opens Daniels Science and Math Magnet Middle School with an eight period A/B schedule and incorporates the the Bates Building. The fence is removed, and sidewalks are poured to connect the two buildings. Sixth , Seventh, and Eighth grades are spread thoughout both buildings. Oops! Furniture has not been changed nor toilets or urinals. Eighth grade students especially are not happy campers. WCPSS has 35,000 students. Growth begins!
  • Daniels moves to a 7 period day

    After his second year at Daniels, principal Marty Gill reinstates a seven period day and assigns grade levels to specific hallways. The Daniels Science Symposium.is initiated at Meredith College.

    Our PTA raised money to install two ceiling fans in every classroom. Walt Sherlin becomes principal.
  • Daniels losses magnet status.

    Leesville Middle School opens and takes 300 students from Daniels.
  • The Year of Three Principals

    The Year of Three Principals
    Daniels loses principal John Modest. He leaves in Novemeber to open Southeast Raleigh High School. We have Dan Bowers as an interim principal until December when Roy Teel, a former social studies teacher in the 70's, returns to Daniels as principal. He later leads Broughton.
  • Daniels undergoes its first major renovation.

    Science labs and team offices are created from exisiting space. The Bates cafeteria and media center are converted to classroom space. The school is finally air conditoned.

    International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme partnership with East Millbrook and Broughton begins. Our faculty begins to travel for IB training!

    A new bell schedule is created for each grade. No longer do we have a common bell schedule.

    Our last major renovation takes three years to complete and adds a new connector wing. Every classroom space is updated. The school moved to mobile pods on site! The bus lane is cut into the front hill ending the front lawn as a fire drill destination. Daniels celebrates its 50th birthday with a grand opening!

    School Board decides to demagnize Daniels and Broughton, IB moves to Garner and Millbrook with their feeders. The last IB magnet students leave Daniels.
