    Israel took control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Israel gained control of land in the West Bank and Gaza with a large Palestinian population.

    Egypt and Syria launched the Yom Kippur War, a surprise attack against Israel in 1973. The war takes its name from the Jewish holy day when the attack began.
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
    Egypt recognized Israel, and Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. The treaty ended 30 years of hostility between Egypt and Israel.
  • Intifada

    Intifada
    In 1987, Palestinian resentment of Israeli occupation boiled over into a rebellion called the intifada. Palestinian youths battled Israeli troops in widespread street violence.
  • Second Intifada

    Second Intifada
    A second infitada began. Palestinian youths were now joined by Palestinian security forces with guns. Hamas sent suicide bombers in to Israel to attack civilians. The Israelis countered by sending troops backed by tanks, fighter jets, and helicopter gunships into cities in the West Bank and Gaza.
