(African American) The school board in little rock, Arkansas, allowed for 9 African american students to attend a white school. The governor (Orval Faubus) called on the national guard to stop them from entering the school, as well as an angry white mob surrounding the school trying to intimidate them. The violence pushed Eisenhower over the edge and he ordered the US army to escort the nine students to school for a year.
