Students will learn how multiply by powers of ten. Students can break apart the number to multiply easily and then add the number of zeros at the end. Example: 12 x 400 = (12 x 4 x 100)
12 x 4 = 48
then you can add 2 zeros from 100 to get 4,800 -
In this lesson, students will learn how to multiply by 2 digit numbers. In 4th grade they learned how to multiply by a single digit number; now they must learn that when you move on to the digit in the tens place, you must add a zero before you continue to multiply. Take a look at the picture for an example. Please click the link for a video to further explain the skill.

In this lesson, students will learn that you can divide by powers of ten by taking out factors of ten. For example:
2,500 ÷ 500 (both numbers have 2 zeros in common so you can cross them out)
25 ÷ 5 = 5; therefore 2,500 ÷ 500 = 5 -
Students will learn how to divide by 2-digit numbers. They will learn how to create a work space to help them with division and how to 'guess good numbers'. The following link is a tutorial on how to divide.
