Over the next 4 years the Khmer Rouge, lead by Pol Pot, take over almost all of the country. Only Phnom Penh is left under the control of Lon Nol.

They execute a large number of Cambodians that were part of Lon Nol's Regime. More than 2 million inhabitants of Phnom Penh are forced out of the city work in labour camps.
