This revolution caused a meeting of the Constituent Assembly, where they decided to create the first constitution of the Kingdom and demand the return of King Dom Joao VI from Brazil.

This left Dom Pedro as the Governor of Rio de Janeiro, which was just a province. Dom Pedro was ordered to return to Portugal and all the courts that his father had made were done away with. This caused two main radical groups, the Bonificans and the Liberals/Freemasons, to rise and fight to keep Brazil and Portugal unified.

Shortly after returning to Rio from Sao Paulo, Dom Pedro received a note from the Constituent Assembly letting him know that they had stripped him of all political power.

After being stripped of Portuguese political power, Dom Pedro declared "Hail to the independence, to freedom and to the separation of Brazil. For my blood, my honour, my God, I swear to give Brazil freedom. Independence or death!"
