    During the 1915 provincial election in Manitoba, one of the Liberal Party's campaign promises was to give women the right to vote. They kept their promise, and Manitoba women received this right in January 1916. Thanks to the efforts of suffragists accorss the country, women in other provinces soon won the right to vote as well. Except Aboriginal and immigrant women.
  • The Conscription Crisis

    While Canada had a high overall rate of volunteers, recruitment was uneven accross the country, with the lowest levels in Quebec. Many French Canidians were farmers and were needed at home. The majority of them did not feel a patriotic connection to either Britain or France becauses their ancestors had come to Canada generations before. Relations between Francophones and Anglophones were also strained because French language rights had been lost in many schools outside Quebec.

    Prime Minister Borden realized that there was strong opposition to conscription in mant parts of Canada. He passed two legislation to try to ensure he would win an election. He introduced the Military Voters Act, which allowed men and women surving overseas to vote. He also passes the Wartime Elections Act, which gave the vote to all Canadian women related to servicemen, but cancelled the vote for all conscientious objectors and immigrants who had come from enemy countries in the last 15 years.
