He did not find the Northwest Passage but did find lots of fish off the Great Banks. This in turn brought many Europeans to North America. He was also the first to draw a map of Canada’s East Coast.

Between 1534 and 1542, Jacques Cartier made three voyages across the Atlantic and claimed the land for King Francis I of Frances. Jacques Cartier was also the first European to explore the St. Lawrence River and to set eyes on present-day Québec City and Montreal. He overheard two captured Iroquois say the word kanata, meaning “village.” He was the first to name this new land "Kanata". By the 1550s, the name of Canada began appearing on maps.

He founded Quebec City. He was also the first man to establish a permanent settlement. Champlain allied the colony with the Algonquin, Montagnais, and Huron who were enemies of the Iroquois. The Iroquois battled with the French settlements for a century but later made peace in 1701.

Hudson's discoveries laid the groundwork for Dutch colonization of the Hudson River region, as well as English land claims in Canada.

The French lost a lot of territory in the Seven Years War. The Seven Years’ War laid the bicultural foundations of modern Canada.

The English defeated the French and this lead to the surrender of Quebec to the British. This brought more British immigrants to Quebec.

When the American Revolution happened, the Loyalists emigrated to Canada to flee the oppression, boosting the population. They also brought many slaves with them which also grew the population of Canada.

The Underground Railroad brought many enslaved African Americans from the States into Canada. Many African Americans decided to come to Canada through The Underground Railroad because slavery had just been outlawed in Canada.

In the 1800's, the Prairies in the West of Canada were opened to immigration to be farmers in the fields. They also wanted people to come and take jobs.

Many Irish were forced to emigrate from their country after having no income from the failure of potato crops. They were the first big wave of foreign immigrants. Many became part of the working class in Canada and helped with the working industry.

About 1 million immigrants came to Canada from the United States, Great Britain and the rest were from Europe.

Many Chinese came to build the British Columbia section of the Canadian Pacific Railway at Gold Mountain. This diversified the culture of Canada.

The CPR is a railroad that connects the East and West of Canada. The railway made it possible for immigrants, including 170,000 Ukrainians, 115,000 Poles and tens of thousands from Germany, France, Norway and Sweden to settle in the West before 1914 and develop a thriving agricultural sector.
