  • Clayton-Bulwer Treaty

    A treaty between the United States and the United Kingdom, negotiated by John M. Clayton and Sir Henry Lytton Bulwer, later Lord Dalling. It was negotiated in response to attempts to build the Nicaragua Canal, a canal in Nicaragua that would connect the Pacific and the Atlantic.
  • McKinley Tariff

    An act of the United States Congress framed by Representative William McKinley that became law. The tariff raised the average duty on imports to almost fifty percent, an act designed to protect domestic industries from foreign competition.
