The Cotton Gib was invented by Eli Whitney. It boosted the economy in America, especially in the South. It also increased the demand for slaves.

Thomas Jefferson is elected president after a long run with Aaron Burr. What began as Thomas Jefferson running with Burr as his vice president changed dramatically after the 12th Amendment was passed. Jefferson ended up winning againts the federalist opponent by a land slide.

On April 20th, 1803, Jefferson made the Louisiana purchase. It doubled the size of America, but went against his beliefs to stick strictly to the Constitution. In the end, Jefferson had to do what was best for his country.

Lewis and Clark were sent out by Jefferson to explore the new territory bought in the Louisiana Purchase. He instructed them to find longitude and latitude of points, figure out Native American customs, and learn about climate, plants, birds, reptiles, insects, and volcanoes.

Jefferson persuaded congress to pass the Embargo Act in 1807, which prohibited U.S. merchant vessles from engaging in foreign trade. His hope was that Britain and France would be crippled economically by the loss of U.S. trade and would be forced to respect his country.

In the year 1808, the US slave trade with Africa ends. That was a part of the 3/5ths compromise. Along with the end of slae trade, the three fifths compromise declared taxes could be put on imports but not exports, and that slaves counted as three fifths of a person as a member of the population.

The Treaty of Ghent settled the War of 1812. There were not many things gained in the War of 1812. There were a few consequences:
1. Contributed to the demise of the Federalist party
2. Intensifying Nationalist feelings
3. Promoting industrialization
4. Sdvancing the career of Andrew Jackson.
