  • Port Royal

    Port Royal
    (population and settlement) The king sent a voyage to go to Nova Scotia to establish a settlement called Port Royal. Samuel de Champlain was a part of Port Royal. Port Royal failed because of its position and because the men were not prepared to survive the harsh winter.
  • Establishment of Quebec

    Establishment of Quebec
    (population and settlement) Samuel de Champlain returns in 1608 to establish a trading post near Stadacona. The reason they set up a trading post was to trade furs with the natives.
  • Begining of the Fur Trade

    Begining of the Fur Trade
    (economy and development) Once the french and the english set up colonies in the New World, the fur trade becomes the center of their economy. They would go to trading posts and trade the natives their goods like guns and tools and in return they would get furs and pelts.

    The 100 Associates Company

    (Official Power and Counter Power) The king granted a monopoly to the 100 Associates Company, meaning that they control the land and they need to populate it.
  • Trois-Rivieres

    Trois-Rivieres
    (population and settlement) Laviolette establishes Trois-Riveres to set up a trading post to trade furs with the natives.
  • Montreal

    Montreal
    (population and settlement) Maisonneuve establishes Montreal to try to convert the natives. It is deep in the Iroquois territory so it is a great spot to convert the natives. It is called Ville-Marie at the time.
  • The King Takes Over New France

    The King Takes Over New France
    (official power and counter power) King Louis the 14th took control of New France because he wants the power over his colony. He believes that he will do a better job running his colony than the 100 Associates Company.
  • Royal Governement

    Royal Governement
    (official power and counter power) The king ended the monopoly and placed New France under the Minister of Marine who was Jean-Baptiste Colbert at the time. The king and the Minister of Marine stayed in France and the Sovereign Council ran New France directly. The council was made up of the governor, then intendant, the bishop and the captain of militia had power but was not a part of the Sovereign Council.
  • Jean Talon as First Intendant

    Jean Talon as First Intendant
    (economy and development) Jean Talon becomes the first intendant of New France and his job is to populate the colony. To do so he did many things like offer soldiers free land after their service was done, he brought the Filles du Roi who were orfan girls on the streets of New France and they got married fast because New France did not have many women. Also, people who were married young, got paid to do so.
  • Religion in New France

    Religion in New France
    (culture and currents of thought) The Clergy was everywhere. The priest are in charge of parishes, they are working as missionaries. Nuns were also working in hospitals and in schools.

    The Seven Years War

    (official power and counter power) In the Seven Years War, the french end up losing and they have to give New France over to the english and it becomes their 14th colony in America. All the french keep are two small islands called St.Pierre and Miquelon.
  • The Canadiens and Americans

    The Canadiens and Americans
    (culture and currents of thought) After many years of people living in New France, the generations born in New France become very autonomous and call themselves Canadiens. At the same time, the generations born in the 13 Colonies become very autonomous too and call themselves Americans.
  • The Articles of Capitulation

    The Articles of Capitulation
    (population and settlement) The French Militia can go home and they will not lose their land. The regular French Army has to lay down their arms and go back to France. The people who stayed became British Subjects.
  • Royal Proclamation

    Royal Proclamation
    (official power and counter power) New France becomes the Province of Quebec. The borders become smaller. The king put in place a civilian government to run the new colony. The english civil and criminal laws were applied. Any unused land would be divided using the township system. No new bishop would be allowed, meaning that there will be no more tithes. And also no roman catholic can hold public office.
