    The assassination of peace
    Prior to the assassination of Archduke Fran's Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary had wanted to stay out of war and handle things peacefully, but when he was assassinated they realized there was no peaceful solution. His assassination was by far the biggest catalyst of World War I.
  • Germany's military increases

    Germany's military increases
    Between 1913 and 1914, Germany added 170,000 full-time soldiers to their army which ended up created a big amount of tension between Germany and European countries.
  • The Great War begins

    The Great War begins
    Russia was the first to mobilize armies. When Russia did this Germany gave them an an ultimatum. Russia refused to back down and so Germany also mobilized it's massive armies. Germany started invading neutral Belgium and then moved on to launch an offensive on Great Britain forcing them to join the war.

    The League of Nations was a major thing that came out of the Treaty of Versailles. In total with military and civilian casualties was more than 41 million: 18 million deaths and 23 million wounded. New countries that were formed from Austria-Hungary's dissolved land is: Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia.

    In 1914 there was two alliances. The triple entente (France, Britain, Russia) and the triple alliance (Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary) and later on Italy would switch sides and Bulgaria and the U.S. would also enter the war which made it so that all the major powers of the world were involved which is why we call it a world war.

    In Berlin, Kaiser Wilhelm II, pledged his country's to whatever Austria-Hungary decided to do with the conflict with Serbia.

    The sinking of the Lusitania played a huge role in America's entry into the war. Germany was using U-boats to sink enemy ships but had an agreement with the U.S. that they wouldn't sink passenger ships from the U.S. when Germany sunk the Lusitania and killed 128 American civilians America realized they had to fight back.

    Germany had an agreement to sink only certain war ships. When they began sinking merchant ships and passenger ships it made countries that weren't involved with the war angry and thus created more enemies for the Germans.

    The Zimmerman note was a article we intercepted that was between Germany and Mexico discussing a Mexican attack on America to get back the land America had gained after the Mexican American war and an alliance between the two countries. This is one major reason we joined the war.

    The Zimmerman note was a note hat contained information about an alliance between Germany and Mexico. Mexico was going to attack America with backing from Germany. When America intercepted this note they realized they were going to get pushed into this war.

    The U.S. entered the war just in time. Russia had made it's own peace treaty and left the war which caused German forces to focus solely on the European front. America's entry into the war helped France hold off the Germans and keep them from advancing and taking Pairs.

    Nationalism is a country's belief that they are the best. These new amendments made it illegal for anyone to say anything negative about the war and allowed for news outlets to spread that America was unbeatable and caused huge numbers of volunteers for the war.

    Hitler was able to rise because he was kind of the face of a new government. He was able to lift Germany out of the depression which gained him a huge following. He came about because he spoke about how Germany needed to rebuild and become stronger than before which gave the people hope and the paired with his ability to not only fix the German equality but make it richer than ever allowed him to gain the people's trust.

    The Treaty of Versailles put all the blame of the war on Germany. It said that Germany had to pay for all the damages done and give up the land they had gained during the war. This caused a Great Depression in Germany and put many people in poverty. It ruined the German reputation.

    In the years following World War I, there were issues of debt and being able to repay it and this really made relationships with allies and what is now the defeated Germany, rocky. The U.S. sponsored the Dawes and you plan to help find a solution to this.

    The Treaty of Versailles said that Germany had to pay for all the damages done throughout the Great War. Germany had spent a ton of money itself on the war and so now having to pay back other countries sent the whole country into a depression.
