    Napoleon led an expidition to Egypt with the goal of interrupting trade between Britain and India, but it ended in Napoleon’s failure
    He hid stories of his losses
  • Consulate 🟢

    During his time as a political leader, before becoming Emperor, he created the Consulate and became First Consul
    After crowning himself emperor however, he abolished the Consulate on May 18, 1804 so that he was the sole power in France

    To restore French economy, Napoleon created the Banque de France (Bank of France) on January 18th, 1800
    This was during his time as a political leader before becoming Emperor
  • Concordat of 1801 🟢

    Concordat of 1801 🟢
    An agreement between the Catholic Church and Napoleon that kept the Church under state control but granted religious freedom to Catholics in France
    It was made official on July 15, 1801
  • Consul for Life 🟢

    After setting up the Consulate and becoming First Consul, Napoleon dubbed himself consul for life
    This was the precursor to him crowning himself Emperor

    Held many enlightenment ideals such as equality for all citizens and religious toleration
    Overturned many rights for women gained by the revolution

    Napoleon invited the Pope to his coronation in Paris
    In a display of his power, he took the crown out of the Pope’s hands and placed it on his head himself

    A naval battle between the British Navy and the joined French and Spanish navies.
    Resulted in a British victory, successfully stopping Napoleon’s invasion, but got Nelson, a British Navy officer, killed.

    Napoleon abolished the long standing Holy Roman Empire in 1806, and replaced it with a 38 member Confederation of the Rhine
  • The Continental System 🟡

    The Continental System 🟡
    The Continental System was Napoleon’s strategy after invasion of Britain failed him.
    Through the Berlin Decrees, “Order in Council”, and Milan Decree, he attempted to isolate Britain and ruin its economy
    Britain used its own blockade in response, and began seizing neutral ships, leading to the War of 1812

    The patriotism of many Spaniards caused them to resist French invasion
    Began using guerrilla warfare tactics against the French, resulting in troops being stuck dealing with their raids when needed somewhere else

    After Tzar Alexander I stopped supporting the Continental System, Napoleon created the Grand Army and invaded Russia
    The Grand Army had 600,000 soldiers with 50,000 horses
    When the army had to turn back because of a lack of food and approaching harsh winter
    Fewer than 20,000 soldiers survived the trip back
  • Battle of Nations at Leipzig 🔴

    Battle of Nations at Leipzig 🔴
    Russia, Austria, Britain, and Prussia all formed a new alliance after Napoleon’s crushing defeat in Russia
    The battle began October 16, 1813 and Napoleon was defeated by October 19, 1813
    He was then exiled to Elba and abdicated

    Napoleon briefly stepped down from his power after a defeat during the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig
    He was exiled to Elba after losing
    His abdication resulted in Louis XVIII becoming king of France, which many émigrés were enraged by
    His eventual return was rejoiced

    A period that began on March 20, 1815, where the stage was set for his upcoming downfall.
    He returned to Paris in March of 1815, and was welcomed back to the country and was triumphant for 100 days
    After those days, he was defeated at Waterloo

    The Battle of Waterloo was Napoleon’s final battle
    He lost the battle against British forces and a Prussian army in only one day
    Napoleon was exiled to the island of St. Helena after his defeat
