  • Balfour Declaration

    The British Government issued the Balfour Declaration. It stated that the British promised a homeland for the Jews in Palestine.
  • British- Palestine Mandate

    British- Palestine Mandate
    In the town of San Remo, Italy, the British and the French divide up the Middle East into mandates. The British aquired Palestine, Transjordan, and Iraq while the French aquired Syria.
  • UN Partition Plan

    UN Partition Plan
    The UN recommended that Palestine be partitioned, or divided into a Jewish and Arab state. Zionists accepted the plan while the Arabs objected to giving up land.
  • War of the Suez Canal

    War of the Suez Canal
    Egypt nationalizes the Suez Canal, promptin Britain, France, and Irael to declare war. Israeli forces take the Suez Canal, but soon withdraw under the pressure of the United States.
  • PLO

    PLO
    Palestinian leaders formed the Palestine Liberation Organization to set up a Palestinian state. Actions from PLO and other radical Arab groups helped spread the Arab-Israeli conflict beyond the Middle East.
  • Six Day War

    Six Day War
    The 3rd Arab-Israeli war that occured. Israel made major territorial gains and took the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights and the West Bank from Syria and Jordan.

    Egypt and Syria surprise attack Israel on Yom Kippur which is the holiest day on the Jewish Calendar. The Arab armies are defeated after the initial gains.
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
    Egypt's president, Anwar sadat, initiated peace talks with Israel. Two years later, with the help of the United States, Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty which led Israel to withdraw its forces from the Sinai Peninsula.
