  • It all Begins

    Though efforts were taken in 1941 to integrate the military, FDR refused to take action. On Sept 27, 1940, a delegation made up of Randolph, White (NAACP )and Hill (National Urban League) met with FDR and other gov’t members to present a memorandum demanding immediate integration of blacks into the armed services. The White house responded by saying “the policy of the War Department is not to intermingle colored and white enlisted personnel in the same regimental organizations.”
  • Threat of a March

    Day that A. Philip Randolph officially proposed a March on Washington to highlight the issues of discrimination in employment and government departments.
  • March on Washington Movement

    1941-1947
    I am not sure tof the exact date the Movement actually started.
    The March on Washington Movement was started by A. Philip Randall and Bayard Rustin. The purpose of the movement was to organize a mass march on Washington, D.C., which would in turn pressure the U.S. government into desegregating the armed forces and providing fair working opportunities for African Americans.
  • FDR's new executive order: Fair Employment Practice Committee

    With only a week left till the march, Roosevelt creates the first national Fair Employment Practices Committee. For the moment, Randolph is satisfied and postpones his protest form more than two decades.
  • JFK Speaks to Leaders

    Pres. John F. Kennedy, speaking to civil rights leaders June 22 during a series of White House meetings on rights problems, questioned the wisdom of holding demonstrations in Washington while COngress was in session but did not ask that demonstrations be canceled.
  • March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom

    The day of the actual march. More than 200,000 people, black and white, participated in this march.
