Lon Nol and his followers are successful in kicking Sihanouk of the throne, and forming a republic. Their reign does not last long.

After an American attack on Cambodia, Lon Nol loses all support. Bringing Pol Pot and his brutal followers to power. Immediatley he begins his brutal war against Cambodia's people.

These four years were brutal, awful periods of terror. At the end of this reign of abuse, nearly 2 million citizens were dead. It ended in 1979 due to Vietnamese invasion.

The first democratic elections were set up, the former Prince winning the presidency.

From 1995 onward mass graves have been uncovered in the fields near Phnom Phen. This area has been recognized as "The Killing Fields" for the thousads of people murdered here.

The mastermind behind the horrible genocide and destruction of the Cambodian people, Pol Pot, died on April 15, 1998, while on house arrest. Two major Khmer Rouge officials were tried for genocide and convicted at arround the same time.
