In 1519, Alonso Alverez de Pineda maped out the coastline of Texas. He was one of the first European explorers to venture out in present -day Texas. Without him we would not be in texas.

Francisco Vázquez de Coronado crossed the Texas Panhandle in search of in search of the seven cities of Cibola. He later found out by a native ruler that there were no seven cities of Cibola.

Jumano Indians requested Spanish missionaries from New Mexico to travel to the vicinity of present-day San Angelo and instruct the Jumanos about Christianity. The indians were very religous and wanted everyone to follow them.

The first Spanish mission, Corpus Christi de la Isleta, is established a few miles from present-day El Paso. This was one of the many spanish missions in Texas. This lead to missions spreading all around Texas.

First East Texas mission under construction, San Francisco de los Tejas, near present-day Weches, Houston Co. The mission is closed in 1693.

Johann Friedrich Ernst, his wife and five children are the first German family to arrive in Texas, settling in present-day Austin County. This is one of the many german families to arrive in Texas.

Mexican troops attempt to take a cannon that had been given to Gonzales colonists for protection from native attack. The action that ensues as Gonzales residents dare the Mexicans to "come and take it" is considered the beginning battle of the Texas Revolution.

Texas Declaration of Independence is adopted at Washington-on-the-Brazos. Washington-on the Brazos was the capitol at the time because Sam Houston would not be in Lamar's capitol.

The US Congress approves, and President James K. Polk signs, the "Joint Resolution for the Admission of the State of Texas into the Union." Texas is now the 28th state of the United States.

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is signed, ending the War with Mexico and specifying the location of the international boundary.This is still the present-day boundary. Without this treaty, we would still have the land that streches along the Rio Grande, and problems with Mexico.

The Secession Convention approves an ordinance withdrawing Texas from Union; the action is ratified by the voters on Feb. 23 in a referendum vote. The United States secession is official on March 2, 1861.

The Battle of Palmito Ranch is fought near Brownsville, after the official end of the Civil War, but word of the war's end at Appomattox on April 9 has not yet reached troops in Texas, they still fight.

The Texas Centennial Exposition opens at Dallas' Fair Park. runs It is open until Nov. 29, and that is still open today. We all love going to the Texas State Fair!

Lyndon B. Johnson beats Coke Stevenson in the US Senate race by 87 votes. The winning margin in the disputed primary is registered in Ballot Box No. 13 in Jim Wells County. Texas now holds the home of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.
