    Invention of the Printing Press

    In 1440, Gutenberg invented the printing press. The printing press, with a few refinements and increased mechanization, remained the main means of printing until the twentieth century.

    Michelangelo Paints the Sistine Chapel

    The Pope asked that Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Vatican, even though Michelangelo insisted he was a sculptor. Eventually he agreed, and is a beautiful painting though no one knows who the characters are.

    Thomas Savery, Thomas Newcomen, James Watt invented the first steam engine.
  • The Reign of Louis XVI

    King Louis XVI became the King in 1774 and his reign ended in 1791. He was 20 years old when he came to the throne, and he immediately remitted some of the most oppressive taxes and instituted financial and judicial reforms. Eventually, he was condemned to death by the people of France.
  • American Revolution

    George Washington lead us in the American Revolution as our first president, while we were fighting for freedom from Great Britain. The war lasted from 1775 until 1783.
  • French Revolution

    The French Revolution began with the meeting of the States General in May.
  • Invention of Steam Boat

    Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston invented the steam boat. By 1814, regular ferry and steam boat rides were offered which traveled at 8 mph downstream and 3 mph upstream.
  • The Beginning of the Potato Famine

    The potato famine began from an air born fungus. The famine led to 1.5 million Irish immigrating to the U.S.
  • Invention of the Sewing Machine

    Elias Howe and Isaac Singer invented the sewing machine in 1850. The machine was invented before in 1755, but did not go into mass production until the Singer Sewing Machine was invented in 1850.
  • The Bombing of Pearl Harbor

    The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, a naval base in Hawaii, a North American territory, causing us to become involved in WWII on both sides of the country.

    Doomsday, June 6, 1944, was when American soldiers cracked the grip of Nazi's on western europe.
