  • Creation of the Communist Party

    Creation of the Communist Party
    The Communist Party was the only legal, ruling political party in the Soviet Union. It was also one of the largest communist organizations in the world. It fell apart in the failure of the August Putch in 1991.

    The Russian Revolution of 1917 was not just one organized event in which Lenin and Bolshevik just overtook Nicholas II; it was, actually, two seperate events (one in February and one in October) that eventually led Russia into a civil war and the takeover of the Communist party.

    Bolshevik Revolution

    The Bolshevik Party went- under the order of Lenin- against the Provisional Government. They seized telegraph offices, electrical works, railroad stations, and the state bank. The Red Guard, their army, took over the Winter Palace and beat the proletariats; "All power to the Soviets!"

    Lenin's New Economic Policy (NEP)
    The USSR needed to raise money to pay for the country ruined in the Civil War. It removed Nationalization of industry and put in an economy which allowed private individuals to own small businesses. The state still controlled banks, foreign trade, and large industries.

    After the Russian Revolution and the Russian Civil War, many people wanted to be one state with one government. Thus, the USSR- Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbijan and Aremenia- was founded with the communist government.

    The USSR set up a missile in Cuba, ready to detonate if the United States were to invade during the Cold War.
  • Glasnost/Perestroika

    Glasnost/Perestroika
    Glasnost was introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev in the mid-1980s; it is a policy of openness and transparency, and it is often associated with perestroika, which is another policy introduced by Gorbachev. Both of these policies are associated with the corruption and fall of the Soviet Union.
  • End of Communist Party

    By 1989, Mikhail Gorbachev was already allowing other parties to exist alongside the Communist Party, but by July of 1990, the party was listed as unable to lead the country. There are still some small remnants of the party in different classified places, but it is not the leading party anymore.

    Democracy of Russia Implemented
    The Russian Constitution declared that Russia be known as a democratic, federal, law-based nation with a Republican government.
