    Nicholas I becomes Czar following his brother's death. Nicholas is known for his constant craving of more power and his strong beliefs on Serfdom. Also, he tried to prevent education about revolutionary ideas so that revolutionary knowledge would not spread. His craving more power is what led to the start of the Crimean War.

    Alexander the II also known as the liberator came into power after the death of his father, Nicholas I, and is know for abolishing serfdom. Serfdom was made during the middle ages which a peasant would work like a tenet for the land owner. The peasant and his family were not slaves because they were paid. Russia was one of the last countries to still have serfdom then.

    After 3 years of fighting, Russia was not able to manufacture as many modern weapons as the western countries leading to their defeat and the Treaty of Paris which was made to end the Crimean war. Russia was left defeated with a huge financial debt and a devastated economy.

    The People's Will and Death of Alexander the II
    The People's Will was created by the people who were distraught by Alexander the II's idea of reform. The peasants were angry after the Emancipation of 1861 because it gave too much power to the land owners. The people devised a plan on how to kill Alexander the II. After many failed attempts they were able to kill him when they threw a bomb at his carriage. After Czar Alexander the III was made Czar of Russia.
