    Vladek Spiegelman gets drafted into the Polish Reserves Army.
  • Poland Left in Ruins

    Poland Left in Ruins
    After an attack was launched n Poland, Britain and France both delcared war on Germany. After one week, Poland surrendered. Since they surrendered millions of Jews, handicapped, homosexual and black people were put in danger from the Germans.
  • Beginning of the WW2

    The UK and France declare war on Germany, which marks the very beginning of World War 2.
  • Vladek Taken as a POW

    Spiegelman was taken as a Prisoner Of War by the Nazi's to a camp near Nuremburg.
  • Phoney War

    War was declared by France and the UK against Germany in WW2, but no power actually executed an offensive attack.
  • Vladek Loses his Factory

    Spiegelman's factory that was given to him by his father-in-law is taken over by the Germans
  • France surrenders

    France surrenders over to Germany.
  • Italy join the war

    Italy failed an attempt to attack France when they lost 5,000 soldiers while the French only suffered eight casualties. Italy was very strong, but they lacked the desire to fight.
  • Miracle at Dunkirk

    After the Battle of Dunkirk, British were trappedat Dunkirk and the Allies come to rescue them in just three days.
  • Bismarck sinks

    The ship the Bismarck sunk after a torpedo from an airplane damaged it's rudder making it immobile. After the torpedo hit, three battle ships attacked the Bismarck which led to it's defeat. The Bismarck was presented to be the largest threat to the Allies before it was sunk.
  • The Nazi Massacres

    After the invasion of Russia the Germans began to execute many of their prisoners and Jews in the area. In two days a total of 33,771 Jews were executed and buried in mass graves. In 1941 600,000 Jews were killed in Russia alone and over 3 million soviet prisoners of the 3.8 million that were captured in 1941 died.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    Six Japanese aircraft carriers flew across the Pacific Ocean to prepare to launch an attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbour. Torpedo bombers and fighters attacked the airfields and ships derstroying ships. One day after this attack, the United States declared war on Japan.
  • Battle of the Coral Sea

    The Battle in the Coral Sea was between Austria and New Guinea. The Allies of the battle were defending port Moresby from being invaded bt sea from the Japanese, who wanted to occupy the port to cut off American from Austraila. In the end the Allies won the battle and the Japanese were forced to push back and recall their invasion fleet.
  • Battle of Midway

    Battle of Midway
    Americans learned that Midway was Japans next target by cracking Japanese codes. The victory at midway was the starting point of the Allies island hopping tactic.
  • Battle of Stalingrad

    Battle of Stalingrad
    The Battle of Stalingrad was the turning point in Europe when the Soviets launched a massive counter attack and pushed towards Berlin, Germany. The Soviets lost a total of 1,100,000 soldiers.
  • Spiegelman's Sent to Auschwitz

    Vladek and Anja Spiegelman are sent to Auschwitz.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    The massive Allies invasion of Europe through France is known as D-Day. The allies gatherd a force of nearly 3,000,000 American, British, and Canadian troops.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    Battle of the Bulge
    This was Hitlers last gasp offensive in order to try to break Allie morale. By the end of the battle Germans lost 120,000 troops, 600 tanks, and 1,600 planes.
  • Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima
    Iwo Jima was important to the US so they could have a base where heavily loaded bombers could reach Japan. Iwo Jima was also the only battle the the U.S. Marine Corps in which the overall American casualties was more than the Japanese.
  • Germany surrenders

    After all the fighting finally Hitler comminted suincide after attempted assasinations and general hatred toward him. The Germans surrendered soon after his death.
  • Hilter's Death

    Hitler was holed up in a bunker in Berlin with the few soldiers left in Berlin. Then Hitler went to his study with Eva Braun were she poisoned herself and Hitler shot himself with his own pistol. Their bodies were burnt to stop the Soviets from parading their dead bodies.
  • Elie is Free

    Wiesel is finally free from the concentration camps and being under power of the Nazi's.
  • Nuremburg Trials

    Nuremburg Trials
    The Nuremburg Trials consisted of 24 surviving Nazi leaders. Of those 24 Nazi's on trial, only 12 were sentenced to death. The other 12 were sent to prison in later trials.
  • Weisel's Father's Death

    Elie's father dies in the concentration camp after being very sick. He died of starvation, and Elie had to leave him behind.
  • Hiroshima

    One of the two cities where Americans dropped on Japan, killing many innocent civilians.
  • Nagasaki

    Nagasaki
    The bomb of Nagasaki was dropped 3 days after Hiroshima. This bomb was smaller than the one that was dropped on Hiroshima, but it still managed to kill 200,000 people. After the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan surrendered to the Americans.
  • Wiesel Gets Hit by a Car

    Wiesel lived in New York and one day he was walking with his friend when suddenly he was hit by a taxi cab. He was given surgery and had 47 fractures. Elie Wiesel stated how it was very ironic how he survived two concentration camps during the Holocaust but was almost killed while crossing the street.
  • Wiesel Becomes a U.S. Citizen

    Wiesel Becomes a U.S. Citizen

  • Vladek Dies

    Vladek Spiegelman dies at the age of 77.
  • Wiesel Returns to Auschwitz with Oprah

    Wiesel agrees to return to Auschwitz one time and Oprah went with him so he could personally share his story of his experience with her.
