The Mexican army tried to remove a cannon from the town of Gonzales, Texas. The rebels were not about to let them do that, they had a flag the said, “Come and take it.” In the following battle, the rebels won. The Texas Revolution, also known as the Texas War for Independence, had begun.

After Mexico won the Battle at the Alamo, Santa Anna, a mexican general, and his troops reorganized at the San Jacinto River, near Galveston Bay. There, they took a stand. They were unexpectedly ambushed. Texans captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign a treaty giving Texas its independence.

The term Manifest destiny was created in 1845. it means it was America's obvious fate, to conquer land all the way to the Pacific Ocean in order to spread democracy. Writer John O’Sullivan named the term. He also wrote that it was America’s “manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole continent which Providence [God] has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty . . . ”

A dispute between borders led to the war.The U.S. Army had better weapons and equipment but was out numbered and poorly prepared. 200,000 soliders mostly composed of young men were volenteers willing to fight.

Scott sailed to the port of Veracruz, the strongest fortress in Mexico, on March 29th. After a long 88 hour artillery attack America won.

It all happened in the Capitol, Mexico City, the capitol. Scott ordered a massive attack. Mexican soldiers and civilians fought fierce battles in and around the capital. Some mexican cadets attending military school at the time tried to help fight but they were no match. On September 14, 1847 Mexico City fell and America won the war.
