British forces burned the capital of the United States, Washington D.C., during the Battle of Bladensburg. -
Indian Removal Act
This allowed the President to negotiate with Native American tribes to remove them to West of the Mississippi. Everyone in the South besides Native Americans and Christian missionaries liked this act. -
Whig Party
Henry Clay was the leader of the Whig Party. They supported Congress over the President and were in opposition of Andrew Jackson. Farmers didn't like this party. This eventually merged into the Republican Party. -
Mexican-American War
This was stemmed from the U.S.'s annexation of Texas in 1845 as well as a dispute over whether Texas ended at the Nueces River or Rio Grande River. -
Gadsden Purchase
This treaty was an agreement between the U.S. and Mexico in which the U.S. agreed to pay $10 million for a 30,000 square mile portion of Mexico. This would later become part of Arizona and New Mexico. -
South Forms the Confederacy
The South was unhappy with the government's regulations and they believed slavery should dominate, so they left the Union and split America. -
Civil War
This war between the North and South states, that lasted four years, primarily existed because the controversy of slavery.
