Mexican Timeline

  • Snata Anna becomes Mexico's President

    Snata Anna helped fight for Mexico's independence from Spain in both 1821 and 1829.
  • Texas is annexed

    Mexicans wanted white people to move to Texas to populate it. Tensions grew and when Texas colonists demanded self-government and Mexico refused, Stephen Austin encouraded a revolt. The Texans won the war and but were soon annexed by the US.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Signed

    After a war, the US and Mexico sign the Treaty of Guadalupe, giving the US the northern third of Mexico.
  • Benito Juarez comes to power

    Although he did not come from a "high-class' background, Juarez was able to get a good education and rise to power.
  • Napoleon III rules Mexico

    After taking over Mexico, the French appoint Napoleon III to rule.
  • Juarez is reelected President

    After the French move out of Mexico, Juarez comes to power.
  • Snata Anna returnes to Mexico

    Snata Anna returns to Mexico poor, blind, and forgotten.
  • Diaz comes to power

    Diaz takes control of Mexico by ousting the president. He became a dictator, but there was a lot of progress under his rule.
  • Zapata fights for freedom

    Zapata wanted land to be returned to the poor and the farmers. He helped defeat Diaz's army. His slogan was "Tierra y Libertad" (Land and Liberty).
  • Diaz steps down and Madero comes to power

    Madero, who believed in deomocracy ran for president, but was arrested by Diaz. He called for a revolution and won many fights with Diaz's army. He won in 1911 and became president.
  • Huerta becomes President

    The people of Mexico did not like Madero because he was too middle of the road. He then resigned and Huerta became president, later having Madero assassinated.
  • The Mexican Constitution is adopted

    Carranza revises the Mexican constitution, promoting worker's rights, land reform, and education. The constitution is still in effect now.
  • Carranza becomes President

    Huerta was unpopular and Carranza wanted to overthrow him. His army overthrew Huerta after he had been in power for 15 months. He then murdered Zapata and revised the Mexican constitution.
  • Obregon becomes president

    After overthrowing Carranza, Obregon came to power, although he was not a dictator. He supported land reforms and public education.
  • The PRI comes to power

    After Obregon was killed, the PRI came to power. While it was in power, there was peace and stability in Mexico.
