    The Spanish American War was a war between Spain and the United States. This war happen because the United States wanted expansion. The United States game out victorious.

    This event took place outside of Havana. A US ship named the Maine was beleive to have been blown up by the Spanish. Outraged, President McKinely and Congress declared war on the Spanish - the Spanish-American War had begun.
  • Annexation of the Philippines

    Annexation of the Philippines
    When war was going on between the United States and Spain, Dewey was planning on attacking the Philippines. Dewey's fleet easily defeated the small Spanish fleet guarding the Philippine city of Manila. The Filipinos had been fighting for independence from Spain for two years. Spanish forces in the Philippines surrendered on August 14, 1898.

    This event took place in Hawaii. The US basically forced Hawaii to join the US. Hawaii became apart of the United States even though opposition from the Hawaiians was prevelant.

    This event took place in China and foreigners and missionaries from the US were blammed for China's problems. A secret society called the Fists of Righteous Harmony - Boxers - were killing foreigners. China had to pay for damages, but they retained the sovereignty.

    Building the canal was very harsh working conditions and shortages of labor and materials hampered U.S. efforts. While the canal was under construction there was a serious outbreak of yellow fever. About 160 trainloads of earth each day was being shoveled. Was more than 43,000 workers, many of those workers were recruited from the British West Indies. The canal was completed on August 15, 1914.

    Roosevelt intented to enforce the Monroe Doctrine, Fearing that Europeans would use force to collect the loans, he issued the Roosevelt Corollary. U.S. prevented any European counrty from seizing Dominican territory. U.S. sent in marines, remained till 1924. U.S. intervention in Latin America continued.

    Occupation of Veracruz
    Wilson ordered U.S. Navy to seize the port of Veracruz, in order to stop a German ship transporting arms. U.S. forces stopped the German ship. During the brief struggle for the city, 19 Marines were killed, and 300 Mexicans died. ABC powers organized a confernece to resolve the crisis. In July, Huerta resigned and fled to Spain.
