    Christianity was introduced by the apostles Thaddeus and Bartholomew; in the first century AD. Armenia embraced Christianity becoming the first nation to do so. King Tiridates III was converted to Christianity.

    Alphabet Created

    Alphabet Created
    Greek and Syriac had a great influence on the development of Christianity in Armenia. A major problem of translating the liturgies and scripture passages was that the Armenian language was primarily oral and had no alphabet of its own. Finally after many years an Armenian monk, Mesrop Mashtots invented the alphabet for the Armenian language. With the new alphabet scripture was created for the language and liturgies easily translated.

    Battle of Manzikert

    Battle of Manzikert
    The Armenian kingdom of Ani fell to the Byzantines in 1045 and to the Seljuks in 1064. The Battle of Manzikert in 1071 destroyed the Byzantine imperial empire and prevented it from reconquering Armenia. This invasion forced many Armenians to move to Cappadocia and later to the Taurus Mountians.

    In the late 1600s the Armenians fell under the control of the Ottoman Empire, a Muslim Turkish empire that had descended from the Seljuks. A small part of Armenia came under Persian rule. Under Ottoman rule Armenians lost all vestiges of an independent political life.

    After the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, which signaled the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Despite the large amount of Armenians who helped fight for the Ottoman Empire alongside the Turkish troops. They were soon blamed for the defeat being called Pro-Russian, which caused a series on massacres from 1894-1909.

    A Soviet Republic
    Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia signed a treaty to form the Transcaucasian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic in March 1922. The Soviet was basically a giant country formed by the forced confederation of many smaller countries into being part of Russia. Soviet Union was a communist empire and Armenians were not encouraged to continue their main religion Christianity. The Soviet Union became one of the strongest nations alongside the United States till about 1989 when it fell.

    On July 5th 1995 Armenians adopted the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia. The constitution provides guarantees of civil rights, the development of democratic institutions with a presiedent and a national assembly, and the creation of a market economy.

    Revolt against Byzantium and Persia
    In this period the Byzantium and Persian empires tried to depopulate the Armenian empire by sending nakharars to attack distant parts of the empire, the Armenians rebelled. The Byzantines continued to fight. The treaty of Nvarsag between Persia and Armenia was signed and brought peace between the 2 empires.
