  • Germany is Officially Unified

    After the defeat in the Franco-Prussian war the German Empire was proclaimed in January 1871 in the Palace of Versailles in France.
  • France loses Alsace & Lorraine to Germany

    The treaty of Frankfurt gave germany most of ALsace and some parts of Lorraine, which became the Imperial Territory of Alsace-Lorraine.
  • Formation of the Triple Alliance.

    The triple alliance was an agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy as a mutual agreement to help each other in war times. It was one of the major factors that started World War 1.

    Russo-Japanese War

    A war between Russia and Japan over Korea. The war was caused by Russia's refusal to recognise Korea as Japan's territory, which sparked a war.
  • Triple Entente formed.

    The triple Entente was a counter-agreement to the Triple Alliance. It was formed between the Russian Empire, the French Third republic, Great Britain and Ireland.
  • Austria-Hunagry annexes Bosnia

    The dual monarchy o Austria-Hungary announced its annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, dual provinces in the Balkan region of Europe.
  • Archduke Franz Ferdinand is Assassinated

    A teenage serbian nationalist gunned down the archduke and his wife as their motorcade sped through the streets of Sarajevo. The Archduke was next in line to the throne.
  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

    One month after the archiduke was assisnated by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia effectively beginning the First World War.

  • The Ottoman-Germany Alliance Formed

    The Ottoman-Germany alliance was an alliance between the German and Ottoman empires that was ratified on August 2. THis was shortly before the outbreak of WWI. The alliance was formed to strengthen and modernize the Ottoman miliatry as well as provide Germany passage to British colonies.
  • The Schlieffen Plan

    This was an operational plan for the attack on France once Russia had started to mobilize its forces near the german border. The execution of the plan led to Britain declaring war on germany on August 4, 1914
  • Japan declares War on Germany

  • Japan declares war on Germany

    Japan sent an ultimatum to Germany on 14 August 1914. The ultimatium went unanswered and as a result Japan then formally declared war on Germany on August 23 1914.
  • Battle of Marne

    Ended September 12, 1914
    An offensive during World War I by the French army and the British Expeditionary Force against the advancing Germans who had invaded Belgium and northeastern France and were within 30 miles of Paris, which resulted in a German defeat.
  • Lusitania sinks

    German U-Boats sink the RMS Lusitania which had approximatley 158 U.S. Citizens on it. The ship sank in 18 minutes. The sinking turned public opinion in many countries against Germany and contributed to the American entry into WWi.
  • Battle of Verdun

    the battle of Verdun was faught from February 21 to 18 December 1916 and was one o the largest battles of the First World War on the Western Front between the German and the French armies.
  • Battle of the Somme

    The Battle of the Somme was a battle fought by the armies of the British Empire and French empires against the German Empire. THe first day of the battle resulted in 57,470 British casualties.
  • Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

    Unrestricted submarine warfare commenced on Feb 1, 1917 by Germany during the First World War. This is a type of warfare where submarines sink vessels without warning.
  • Vladimir Lenin seizes power in Russia.

    Vladimir Lenin's rise to power would bring change across the board for Russia, most notably the creation of the Soviet Union.
  • The Zimmerman Telegraph is found.

    This telegraph, sent from Germany to Mexico, was a proposition to Mexico asking Mexico to join the Triple Alliance and attack the United States. This gave the US enough reason to join the Triple Entente and attack Germany.
  • Tsar Nicholas II Abdicates

    Tsar Nicholas II signed a forced abdication in favor of Grand Duke Mikhail on March 15, 1917.
  • The United States enters WW1.

    The US entered the great war nearly 3 years after it began, and because of their huge advantages in morale, arms, men and recources managed to defeat the Triple Alliance.
  • Bolsheviks emerge as a political group

    The Bolsheviks was a member of a wing of the Russian Social-Democratic Workers Party which led by Lenin seized control of the goverment of Russia and became the dominant political power.
  • President Wilson Proposes his 14 Points

    On January 8 1918 at a speech on War Aims and Peac Terms President Wilson set down 14 points as a blueprint for world peace tht was to be used for peace negotiations after world war 1.
  • The Treaty Brest-Litovsk

    The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was a peace treaty signed on March 3 1918. It ended Russia's participation in WW1 and was signed between the new Bolshevik Government of Soviet Russia and the Central Powers
  • Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates

  • Kaiser Wilhelm Abdicates

    On November 9 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm (Emperor of Germany) officially abdicated. Two days later on 11 November the armistice for the end of WW1 was signed.
  • The Treaty of Versailles

    The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties at the end of WWI. It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers.
  • Joseph Stalin comes into power in Russia.

    By far the most brutal dictator Russia has ever expirianced, an estimated 34-49 million people are estimated to have been killed as a result of his actions.
  • Germany stops reparation payments to France

    In March 1930 the German Government collapsed and as a result Germany suspended paying its reparation payments to the allies.
