    This a important event because Germany used unrestricted submarine warfare agantist the British. When the British passenger ship Lusitania was sunk and 1,198 people were left dead. 128 of them were U.S. citizens. The American public was outraged. President Wilson sent a strong protest to Germany. But after two further attacks they stopped. However, they returned to implementing unrestricted submarine warfare. They knew it might lead to war with the U.S.
