  • Civil War Starts

    Civil War Starts
    The Civil War began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate shore batteries fired on Union's Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s bay. In 34 hours, 50 Confederate weapons launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. Major Robert Anderson, commander of the Union base, surrendered. Two days later, US President Lincoln issued a notice calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to help end the Southern mess. 90,000 came from Wisconsin, more than President Lincoln asked for.

    The Peshtigo Fire burned 1,875 square miles and destroyed twelve communities, killing 1,200 to 2,500 people. People think it was caused by a small fire that was used for land-clearing and blew out of control because of unusually high winds. This fire happened on the same day that the famous Chicago fire happened so this fire is often referred to as "the Forgotten Fire."

    The first dairy school in the U.S. was established at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Just 40 years later, in 1930, Wisconsin earned the title “America's Dairyland” which was added to the Wisconsin license plate in 1939.

This motorcycle company is based in Wisconsin's largest city, Milwaukee. As the Industrial Revolution happened, interest increased in wheeled and motored transportation, and the assembly line helped motorcycle production go faster.
