What Are The Top Ten Discoveries of Mars?

  • Spirit Landed

    Spirit Landed
On January 4th, 2004 Spirit the Mars rover landed on Mars. Spirit was a robotic rover on Mars. It officially landed at 4:35pm on January 4th, 2004. It uncovered many secrets we didn't know about Mars or at least started a case for some which Opportunity, its twin, may have solved in the future. Spirit roamed Mars for 6 years.
  • Opportunity Landed

    Opportunity Landed
After Spirit had landed NASA had made the decision to send up their other rover Opportunity. Opportunity was launched to Mars on July 7th, 2003 and landed on January 25th, 2004. Opportunity is still living to this day but sadly it's twin Spirit had passed in 2010.
  • Spirit Dead

    Spirit Dead
Sadly, once in awhile someone we love must die and sadly this time it was Spirit. Spirit had us interested since the very beginning. The world has always love Spirt and its discoveries. It passed away on March 22nd, 2010. We all loved Spirit and we will continue to love it more in the future.
  • Dust Devil

    Dust Devil
NASA's Mars rover Opportunity has been wondering around Mars for over 6 year now and has finally found its first dust devil. Opportunity had tried many times to catch a dust devil and they had all failed until the 15th of July, 2010. Opportunity was driving for 70 meters at a south-east direction and came across a dust devil. That is when the photo of the dust devil was captured.
  • Mars is made of...

    Mars is made of...
On August 3rd 2012 the materials of mars were finalized. The surface is made out of oxidized iron dust. Beneath that dust is what is called the Martian crust. It consists of mostly volcanic basalt rock. The soil of Mars contains many nutrients like sodium, potassium, chloride and magnesium. The crust is 30 meters thick. Mars also has huge volcanos that are made of molten rock. The mantel of Mars is made of silicone, oxygen, iron and magnesium. The core of Mars consists of iron nickel and sulfur
  • The Steambed

    The Steambed
In late September of 2012 Curiosity stumbled upon something that changed the way we may look at Mars. It found a steambed of small sand grains, rounded pebbles and rocks that have been cemented together to make a hard layer of land. On Earth a common sign of water is small rocks that have traveled through the land from the water pushing them along. This leads us to think that water used to flow on Mars.
  • Blue Dust

    Blue Dust
NASA's Mars rover Curiosity finds one of the biggest discoveries of all time. It found out that Mars is actually BLUE rather than red! This is huge because we have called it the red planet for YEARS and this may be another sign that water used to flow on Mars. The blue dust is called tridymite. Mars has had a volcanic past and scientists believe that this relates to it.
  • Aliens on Mars

    Aliens on Mars
After a video on YouTube went viral people have been suggesting that there have been aliens on Mars. NASA says that they believe it could be a horse or dinosaur bones. There is not very much evidence that lead either of these theories to be correct.
  • The Spoon

    The Spoon
Recently NASA found a photo from one of their rovers. In the photo it appears to have an old dusty spoon. Many people believe it's proof of past lifeforms that lived on Mars. Quite a few other people just believe that it's a rock shaped like a spoon that the rover just came across. What do you believe?
  • Colourful Find

    Colourful Find
Recently Curiosity has found out that Mars is more than just red and blue. It has been found that some of Mars is purple. Curiosity has found some different types of minerals in the purple rock, but there is still not very much information on this topic as it is a very recent discovery. Scientists don't know what this could mean yet.
