  • Proclamation of 1763

    British victory brought responsibility for former French subjects, France’s native American allies, and British colonists. It prevented westward expansion past the Appalachian Mountains.By doing this it kept colonists on the coast so they would be closer to the English colonial authorities. It also facilitated the collection of taxes.
  • Northwest Territory

    The Land Ordinance of 1787 broke up land into acres to pay back debt, education, and cost of moving out west. The Northwest Ordinance gave rules for states, and prohibited slavery.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    This purchase was made in 1803 and doubled the size of America. It also gave access to natural resources, waterways, and fertile farmland. It gave colonists access to the Mississippi River.
  • West & East Florida

    Spain owned Florida. West Florida was a part of the Louisiana Purchase.
  • Red River Basin

    The Red River Basin is a northern river. It is located on the border of Canada and the United States. Empties Lake Winnipeg.
  • Webster-Ashburton Treaty

    This treaty resolved between the United States and North British American colonies. It resolved the dispute about the Maine-New Brunswick border, established Lake Superior and Lake of the Woods border, confirmed the location of the Rocky Mountains border, ended the slave trade, and agreed to share the use of the Great Lakes.
  • Texas Annexation

    This annexation admitted Texas to the Union as the 28th state which led to the Mexican-American War. Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, and Oklahoma all were part of the Texas territory.
  • Mexican Cession

    Present day southwestern United States that Mexico gave to the United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It was not part of the Rio Grande.
  • Oregon Territory

    This territory existed from August 14, 1848 to February 14, 1859. The southwestern portion of the territory was admitted to the Union as the State of Oregon. Divided by the United States and Britain in 1846. Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana were parts of this territory. Oregon City was the capital.
  • Gadsden Purchase

    The Gadsden Purchase was a treaty signed by James Gadsden that purchased Arizona and southern New Mexico from Mexico on December 30, 1853. Was the last major territorial purchase made by the United States.
  • Alaska

    In 1866 the Russian government offered Alaska to the United States. Alaska was bought for $7.2 on March 30, 1867. The United States acquired 600,000 square miles.
  • Hawaii

    In 1820 interest in Hawaii began when New England missionaries wanted to spread their faith. America acquired Hawaii as part of the sugar trade. The McKinley Tariff raised taxes on foreign sugar. If Hawaii were annexed by the United States the tariff would disappear. Queen Liliuokalani determined Hawaii’s problems were foreign interference. Granted statehood in 1959 as the 50th state.
