    The Allies gathered some 1,300 warships and more than 180,000 troops to drive the enemy from Okinawa in an effort. Japanese pilots flew nearly 2,000 kamikaze attacks against this fleet. As American soldiers stormed ashore, defenders made equally desperate banzai charges.
