Texas 1800-1900

  • Texas Declare Independence

    In 1810, Texas first declared independence from Spain, although it was not granted until 1821. A primary reason for Texas declaring independence from Spain was in response to Manifest Destiny, in which Texas wanted to continue to expand out and explore new territories.
  • Immigration Ban on Texas

    Mexico placed a ban the US immigration into Texas. This allowed for Mexico to start taking control over the Texas government, which would then lead to the Texas Revolution that would start in 1835. This ban made it illegal for Texas settlers from bring more slaves into Texas.
  • Start of Texas Revolution

    The Texas Revolution started on October 2, 1835 with the Battle of Gonzales. The start was because of the refusal of many Texans, and the push back, that was in reaction to Mexico trying to take full control over the Texas government. This sparked some issues because the settlers were predominately American and not Mexican.
  • End of Texas Revolution

    The Texas Revolution ended on April 21, 1836. Texas was defeated by the Mexican Army at the Battle of the Alamo, but then Sam Houston turned around and defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, which gained Texan's their independence from Mexico.
  • Texas Admitted into the Union

    Texas was admitted into the union on December 29, 1845, which made Texas the 28 state of the Union. Texas joining the Union was a result of the Texas Revolution, where Texas had gained independence from Mexico.

    Mexican-American War

    The Mexican-American War initially started because of disputes over the boarders of Texas, and what all land Texas would have control over. Additionally, this war was started because of Mexico's unwillingness to recognize Texas' independence. This war ended with the board of Texas being the Rio Grande River.
  • Juneteenth

    On June 19, 1865, all Texas slaves were emancipated, allowing them their freedom. This is a key part in history, because it marked the end of slavery in the US.
  • Texas Rejoins United States

    On March 15, 1866, the US government passed an ordinance which nullifies the actions of the Confederate States secession, which was then followed by the proclamation of peace between the United States and Texas.
  • Texas Constitution Adopted

    The Texas Constitution was adopted on February 15, 1876, which established the structure and purposes on the Texas government. This constitution, which was very lengthy with many bill of rights, stated and made it known that Texas was an independent and free state. Additionally, that constitution made it to where all free men had equal rights.
  • Oil Discovered

    In 1886, a farmer was drilling for water and found a small quantity of oil, but this did not lead to mass production of oil yet. In 1894, crews in Corsicana were drilling for water when they found oil, which then resulted in the mass production attempt to find more oil in Texas.
