Northern African Americans wanted to climb the social ladder, wanting to become equal to their white coworkers. They thought through education and hard work they could be at equal level to those around them. They also created schools and churches to further along their strategy of moving up the social ladder

Once Mexico gained independence from Spain, they invited Americans to live on the land they had. Many southerners had brought their slaves along with and in 1835-36 when Mexico adopted a new constitution. Rebels attacked and for a while Mexico didn't fight back. The issue over whether or not to bring Texas to the US was not brought to Congress by the president over fears of a war with Mexico and that it may "break up the union of the United Sates"

When Congress passed the tariff, it protected north and western agricultural products from competition with foreign goods. This rose prices and dropped product value in the south. And the south loss many products that would have been sold to England.

In the north where slavery was mostly banned, they didn't like that it was still used in the south. This created tensions with southerns that justified that it was necessary and since it was in the bible, it was okay and should be allowed. But many thought it was a sin and needed to get rid of slavery.

An African American man who killed 55 white men, women and children in order to revolt against his master after being taught to read. He led others to try to gain their freedom after reading parts of the bible. This lead to Virginia to make their laws rougher on slaves and now slaves could no longer be taught how to read.

In 1837, England wanted to boost the British economy. They decided to cut trade with the US or lowered the prices that they would buy at. This led to the colipase in the south were they could no longer make the profit that they were once making.

A book that described the horrors of being a slave in the south. To many it raised their hated for slavery. This book also helped lay the ground work for the civil war.

After suing for freedom, Dred Scott made the case since a former master brought him to a free state, that he himself should be free since he had lived in a free state. But the courts decided against it. The courts declared that both free and slave African Americans couldn't sue for citizenship because they will never citizens in the eyes of the courts.
