    With the start of the Industrial Rrevolution the people of central Europe started to emigrate heavily. These people went to US for increased economic activity. This excessive emmigration affected the economy in central europe
  • Congress of Vienna

    Congress of Vienna
    The meeting of the Congress of Vienna posed a serious question about how to take care of the conglomeration of states in central europe. What they decided to do was to create the German Confederation. A confederation of 39 countries. But this confederation was no where close to the unification needed for economic and political success/power. The confederation failed shortly afterward.

  • German National Assembly

    German National Assembly
    The german nat. Assembly met for the first time in the midst of riots and revolt to try and form a government that granted rights, such as freedom of press, religion, etc. They elected their leader, the vice reagent, but the government did not go very well.
  • United States Recognizes German Republic

    The United States announced that they were prepared to recognize any unified German government, and sent over ministers to help aid in the unification. After the failure of the German unification in 1948 the United States took back their support.

    Otto von Bismark was the leader of Prussia at the time and was a proponent of a "smaller Germany" His goal was to unify and protect the german states and he did that during the first war.The first war of German unification was the 1862 Danish War, begun over the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Bismarck allied with Austria to fight the Danes in a war to protect the interests of Holstein, a member of the German Confederation.

    Otto Von Bismarck as a result of a political crisis becomes the Minister President of Prussia with the main objective of making Prussia more dominent that Austria.

    The second war of German unification was the 1866 Austro-Prussian War, which settled the question of “smaller” versus “greater” Germany. (Austria v Prussia) THis war only lasted about 7 weeks but after this war Prussia annexed alot of Austrrias smaller nations but left some of the larger ones for Austria .

    The Franco-Prussian War
    After revolt in Spain France feared a German king in Spain. After discussions with France Bismarck released a version of the discussions to the press that gave the impression that they insulted the French ambassador. France declared war on Prussia, and after a seige of Paris, Prussia defeated France, ending the war with the treaty of Frankfurt.

  • Otto Von Bismarck becomes first chancellor of Germany

    After unifying the German states Otto Von Bismarck becomes the frist imperial chancellor of Germany, while also maintaining most of his Prussian problems. Given that Austria was not included in unified Germany it left them with a authoritarian government, where Von Bismarck had control over most everything.
