The Soviet Union
The Soviet Union was a country made of others that we know today. The people there wanted to become a communist country. It existed for 69 years, until enough people broke off and the country broke apart. Ukraine was one of these countries, and after it broke off, Ukraine became an independent country. Note that some "Russians" nevertheless live in Ukraine too. -
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or Atlantic Alliance (NATO) is a military organization and international political group that strives for the freedom and security of its members. It was formed in April 4, 1949, Washington, D.C. and created in the aftermath of the World War II in the hope of avoiding future wars between nations. Ukraine establishes relations with NATO although they do not join because of France. -
Budapest Memorandum
After the soviet unions collapse Ukraine is left with the 3rd most nuclear firepower in the world, and agrees to trade it away in exchange for respect from other countries for Ukraine as an independent country. -

The Next Election
After Leonid Kuchma resigned from office, his hand picked successor Viktor Yanukovych runs for president against Viktor Yushchenko, and towards the end of the campaign Viktor Yushchenko falls mysteriously ill, and Yanukovych Wins the election -
Orange Revolution
After Viktor Yanukovych becomes president. People think he rigged the vote, and massive protests start. When they revote, Viktor Yushchenko wins, and becomes the president of Ukraine. -
Russian Gas
Gazprom, the Russians gas company suddenly stops pumping gas to Ukraine and other countries. Under international pressure Tymoshenko the prime minister of Ukraine, strikes a deal with Russia and gas flow resumes. -
Yanukovych Strikes Back
In February of 2022 Viktor Yanukovych becomes president once again. -

The Maidan Revolution
Yanukovych refuses to sign an association agreement with a European union to bring Ukraine into a free trade agreement. There are massive protests following this, and people protest for Yanukovych to resign. -
The Bombing of the Maiden Revolution
Yanukovych Bombs the protestors against him, and then runs away, exiling himself in Russia. -
New Government
Ukraine makes a new government, and signs the EU agreement, but Russia thinks that creating a new government is illegal so President Vladimir Putin sends Russian soldiers to the Crimean Peninsula. -
The Crimean Parliment Votes to Go To Russia
After Russia takes control of the Crimean Peninsula, the people of the parliament vote to join Russia (97%) -
Russia Invades Donbas
40000 Russian troops invade Donbas, and Donbas wants independence from Ukraine -
Agreement
Russia, Ukraine, France, and Germany meet in Belarus to stop violence, but the cease-fire soon breaks and they continue to fight. -
Minsk Fails Again
The Minsk group meets once again to try to resolve the fighting, but the second Minsk agreement does not stop the fighting either. -
