Canada at War
Canda being apart of the British Empire, they were forced to go to war when Britain declared battle against Germany and to stand by their side. Although they lost a lot of men during the War, they were loyal to Britain and showed much war effort making them reputable to their own allies and citizens. (1) -
The War Measure Act
The War Measures Act was a federal law that was introduced in August 1914. It gave the Canadian Government inevitable powers used to maintain security and orders during the war. It led the government to suspend civil rights to "enemy aliens", many people were arrested in mass groups and had no chance of trial. Canada did gain more security and lead towards the war but had no doing for the Citizens and made life typically worse for them. (0) -
Battle Action of Ypres
Canada sees the first major action of battle at Ypres. Canada fought hard and never gave up, within 48 hours, with 6000 Canadians, during the battle one of three men became casualties. Germans released a chlorine gas that endangered the majority of Canadian Troops. Too many lives were sacrificed in the Battle of Ypres but Canada still managed to keep the Germans from breaking through their forces. (-1) -
First Canadian Aerial Victory
Flying was in its early stages and was very difficult to learn, flying and landing a plane would be counted as a bizarre accomplishment. Captain M.M Bell-Irving was an air pilot, he was apart of the No. 1 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. On this day he achieved the first-ever aerial battle victory by a Canadian. He acquired this victory by shooting down a German aircraft. This was a huge part of history, the first-ever victory in the air, as well as the, come up of aircraft. (+2) -
The Battle of Vimy Ridge
During the battle, all four Canadian divisions and a British Bridagecame as one unit went to take over the ridge leading in success. 3500 troops died and 7000 were injured. It was a glorious victory. After winning and taking over Vimy Ridge, it was a high point on land that gave advantages to the troops in almost any way, troops died but they did battle for the victory of Vimy Ridge. (+1) -
Storming of Hill 70
This attack on Hill 70 was an important victory located in France, was the first-ever major action under the Canadian command. Before this, they were under allied commands and usually under the British Empires lead. The attack led to success in victory, Canada had also withstood a German Counterattack. The battle was to capture more area to draw German troops away. It proved that Canada was capable under their own government and showed how powerful of a force they were. (+2) -
The Wartime Election Act
The Canadian Wartime Election was an important time in History, changing many things, it was a bill that was passed by Robert Borden. This Act allowed for women that were related to any soldiers oversea to have the right to vote. These women were the first ever to vote in a legitimate Canadian federal election, these women also felt strongly towards conscription. This is the come up of equality in gender and influenced more laws in the future. (+2) -
Halifax Harbor Explosion
The Halifax Harbour was mainly used during WW1 to refuel and repair ships, therefore many ships were docked at the same time. A French vessel holding 2500 tonnes of explosives was once at the dock, another ship hit the vessel leading to an impulsive explosion, 2000 were killed and 9000 were injured. The explosion also wiped out parts of cities and blowing up homes making some homeless. The explosion caused many sacrifices to the land and population, this was a downfall in time. (-2) -
Signing the Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles signed in June 1919, the treaty had meant to imply peace between allies and the opponent, which was Germany. The treaty claimed heavy guilt on Germany and have charged taxes towards Germany which made them into heavy debt. I believe this treaty backfired on Germany for somewhat initiating the war, but now allows Canada and its allies peace, it was intended to end the war after all the harsh years. (+2) -
The Famous Five
The Famous Five made historical significance to Canada. They were five women advocating for women and children. The Famous Five had fought for rights that men usually had. The Famous Five had accomplished the right for women to serve inside of the Senate and made way for women to become able to participate in many other aspects in Canada. These women won the right to make other Women have better lives. Women are now people who have their own rights. (+2)
