  • Scientists and philosophers

    Galileo Galilei (1632) purposed the heliocentric theory, as well as used the telescope and scientific methods. Isaac Newton: he also contributed to science with the gravity discovery. John Loke, a philosopher, also took part in this movement for knowledge and questions, talking about the Tabula Rasa.
  • Enlightenment

    This happened after the Middle Ages, and it seeks for knowledge. It did this with philosophical movements and scientific revolutions. It made progress.
  • Popular movements: revolution and revolt

    Revolution: it is a change in the way of thinking, in the established order, in the government, and in the economy; it is a complex organized movement. Revolt: it is a protest by a smaller group of people.
  • Rulers like Maria Theresa

    Rulers had to be enlightened, which meant that they had to care for their people. They didn't censor or banned anything, and they had to support scientific, educational and philosophic advances (they themselves contributed). An example of an enlightened ruler was Maria Theresa.
  • Seven years war

  • Rights and freedom

    Natural rights: justice for everyone, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of press (no censorship). XV - XIX century, they started gaining power.

  • Revolutionary fight

    There was crisis until the 1770s. In 1774 the 13 colonies organized the Continental Congress (Philadelphia). From 1775 to 1783 there was an open fight (war) for independence of the 13 colonies; the declaration of independence was on July 4th, 1776
