    Idea of the Internet
    The Cold War sparked a fear in scientists and the military that if the Soviets were to attack the nations telephone system all of the wires and lines that allow distance communication would be destroyed. A scientist named J.C.R. Licklider proposed the idea of a "galactic network" of computers.     Vinton Cerf
    As packet-switching computer networks grew, things became more difficult. A computer scientist name Vinton Cerf began to solve this problem by creating "Transmission Control Protocol" or TCP/IP. This allowed all mini-networks to communicate with one another. This transformed the internet into a worldwide network and allowed researchers and scientists all throughout the 1980s to send files and data from one computer to another.     Tim Berners-Lee is also responsible for the first ever published website. It was published on August 6, 1991 and was about the World Wide Web project. It described the Web and how to navigate and use it. The sites URL was http://info.cern.ch. Berners-Lee created this and refused to patent or make any money off of it.     Netscape
    In 1992 student researchers from the University of Illinois created a browser that they called Mosaic, which later became Netscape. The browser offered a easy way of searching the web. This same year congress decided that the Web could be also be used for commercial use which caused companies to set up websites of their own, sparking the selling and buying of goods over the internet.     Six Degrees
    Six Degrees is considered to be the first social networking site. It was founded by Andrew Weinreich in May of 1996 and then launched in 1997. Six Degrees was a combination of "profiles, friends lists and school affiliations in on service." The site had millions of registered users, but because there weren't many connected to the internet, the site was sold in December of 2000.     LinkedIn
    LinkedIn was created by Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly and Jean-Luc Vaillant. LinkedIn evolved from a website for resumes, to a networking site. Within the first month it had 4,500 members. As the company continued to grow and add new features, "in the spring of 2011, the company went public and became the biggest initial public offering for an Internet company to date since Google."     Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard sophomore. It was originally created for only Harvard students, but became public September of 2006. Facebook is "now the top social networking site, and second only to Google in web rank." The creative process of Facebook is portrayed in the 2010 movie "The Social Network."     Instagram
    Instagram was created and founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in October of 2010 and is now the number 1 photo social platform. After just two months of being active, it already had 1 million users. Instagram was bought by Facebook in April of 2012.     Google+
    Google+ is the latest social network from Google. Its functionalities are similar to Facebook with a news feed, photo albums and groups, but is slightly more advanced then Facebook is regards to its video chat room called Hangouts.
