Theme 5: Africa in the Age of Slave Trade

    First Slave Trade

    The first slave trade from Africa happened in 1441, when Africa sent their first export of slaves to Portugal. This relates to the thesis because it shows that Africa started trading slaves. This shows change because it is the start of slave trade, instead of Africa trading products like gold and spices.
  • Period: Jan 1, 1450 to

    Thesis

    Throught this time, from 1450 to 1750, the Africans were trading more often, and instead of their original exports, they began trading slaves. But near the end of the Age of Slave trade, Africans began to realize slavery wasn't right, because it was inhumane and cruel, and caused great conflict, such as wars and destruction of their villages, so they abolished slavery.

    Portugese take over Kongo

    The Portugese sent missionaries and military to Kongo to take over and control as much as land as possible. They then began to gain the African's trust and treat them like equals, as did Leopold II of Belgium. After gaining their trust, they began enslaving them and trading. This shows continuity because Portugal stayed in Africa and continued slave trade. This relates to thesis because it shows how people strived for Slave trade and wanted it greatly, with the use of violence and conflict.

    Portugal takes over of Good Hope

    The Portugese continued to expand throughout Africa, gaining land until the came to Cape of Good Hope, which was a big trading place. They civilized the area, creating ports and trading posts, and built El Mina, an important factory. This shows continuity because it shows that Portugal stayed in African and was still interested in slave trade. It relates to the thesis because it shows the expansion of slave trade.

    Esigie limits slave trade

    Esigie, the Oba (king) of Benin limited slave trade in his country and traded other goods. This shows a change because Africa is beginning to notice that slave trade is not humane. This relates to the thesis, because it shows the beginning of stopping slave trade.

    English Slave Trade

    The English entered the Slave Trade in 1562, to use slaves for more labor work and to increase reveneue. This is continuty, because slave trade still exisisted and began to grow greatly. This relates to the thesis, because Africa is trading slaves for profit and slave trade grew greatly.
  • Fall of Songhay Empire

    The Morocco invaded the Western Savanna, and successfully defeated the Songhay empire. The states/countries in Central and South Africa were small and had little to no military power. The Morocco invansion produced a lot of conflict. This relates to the thesis, because it shows how slavery and slave trade lead to great conflicts. This is a change because it shows how strong Morocco grew and how they took over African states.
  • Dutch colonize at Cope of Good Hope

    The Dutch East India Company colonized at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, to place trading posts and shops because many merchants were coming there since the Portugese cilivzed there. The Dutch created farm lands because of the very fertile land, but used slaves a lot for their work. This a change, because the Dutch began using African Slaves instead of Indonesian slaves. This relates to the thesis, because it shows how people really relied on slave trade and how conflicts began because of Dutch
  • English charter Royal African Company

    The English wanted to have their own source of slaves to expand their newere colonies, such as Jamaica, so they chartered the Royal African Company, which provided slaves for them. This is continuity because the French soon also looked for their own source of slaves. This relates to the thesis, because many people are still looking to use slave trade because it is very benefical for them.
  • Osei Tutu gains Power

    Osei Tutu expanded the Okoyo Clan. He then merged and connected many clans together. He created the term asantehene, which is a complete ruler. He built a strong military and a big bureuacracy. This shows a change because the African states/countries were coming together and becoming one big strong power. This relates to the thesis, because the Africans are coming together in attempt to stop slavery.
  • English import slaves to Spanish Empire

    In 1713, the English got the right to import slaves from Africa to Spain, which allowed them to have more slaves to do labor work and produce more revenue, reduced the stress on the goverment and people. This is continuity because slave trade still continued after this and still grew. This relates to the thesis, because slave trade was still around and more and more people were looking for slaves.
