  • President Madison takes office.

    Britian did not want Madison to take office. Americans were upset with Britian for arming Native Americans in the Northwest, they also resented the impressment of American sailors by British.
  • War Hawks take power.

    Members of the war hawks, Clay and Calhoun of South Carolina. The New Englanders with war with Britain would hurt American trade. New England had the strongest opposition.
  • Relations with Great Britian worsen.

    British made contact with the United States. They would continue on with the impressing of sailors. During this time, Native Americans began new attacks on frontier.
  • Congress declares war on Britian.

    The war was declared due to the Natice American's attacks on the Northwest. Britian was still in war in England, making it difficult to defend.
  • America is not ready for War.

    Jefferson made cuts for spending that weakened military strength. The navy had only 16 ships that were prepared. Also, the army only contained 7,000 men.
  • Britian blockades American ports.

    Just in the first days of wwar, Britian made blockades. A blockade is the shutting of a port or road to prevent people or supplies from inporting and exporting. The British navy had 135 warships blockading American ports.
  • Invasion of Canada.

  • USS Constitution scores a victory.

    USS Constitution defeated the British warship Guerriere. The battle was fierce. According to tradition, the ship was named the Consitution because British artillery fire bounced off the ships wooden hull.
  • Battle of Lake Erie.

    American forces had great luck in this battle. The control of this lake was important, so because they fought better the war was short. American flagships were badly damaged.
  • Battle of Thames.

    British and Native American allies retreated. General William Henry Harrison pursued them. They had followed the British into Canada, defeating them.
  • Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

    Native Americans suffered defeat in the South. Andrew Jackson took command of American forces in Georgia. Jackson defeated the Creeks at the battle.
  • Washington, D.C. attacked and burned.

    The British made a strategy was to attack the nation's capital. British force marched into the city. Dolley Madison took the papers and documents and left the White House, leaving the conflict.
  • Attack on Baltimore.

    Their first objective was Fort McHenry.
  • The Writing of the Star Spangled Banner.

  • Hartford Convention.

    Federalists' had meetings to address their problems. The inconvienences became a problem not discussed due to ongoing war. Their dicussion then led to slaves having more power.
  • Treaty of Ghent.

    The Treaty of Ghent was a contract and debate that ended the War of 1812. The treaty kept together the two nations. It also made it so there was no loss of territory.
  • Battle of New Orleans.

    The final big battle of the war. The United States defeated Britian in this battle. Also called the greatest land victory of the year.
