A war between Russia and Japan that was started over disputes surrounding who would get what parts of Manchuria and Korea. Japan won this war and left Russia humiliated, and prompted many soldier's resentment for the government in 1905.

One of the most violent and horrific days of Russian history. Workers form steel factories, disgruntled by working conditions and the ongoing war with Japan, sought reform, and peacefully protested outside the Winter Palace of Tsar Nicolas II. Instead of being greeted by the Tsar, they were gunned down by panicked soldiers. This was a major factor in triggering the first Russian Revolution.

After the events of Bloody Sunday, waves of displeased workers, soldiers and other citizens had strikes and protests surrounding the government, and attempted to overthrow the Tsar. They were not successful, however this event did foreshadow their success later on in the next Russian Revolution.

Germany declares war of Russia, prompting their entrance to World War I. This was started due to Russia's alignment with Serbia, and they threatened Austria-Hungary they would attack if they invaded Serbia.

A series of protests commence in Petrograd (formally and presently St Petersburg) which last for 8 days and cause the abolition of the Russian Monarchy. On March 2nd, Tsar Nicolas II abdicates his power and removes his only son from his position as heir. A Provisional Government is created to replace that Tsarist one, led by Prince Lvov.

After being exiled to Serbia in 1895 after 13 months in solitary confinement, leader of Bolsheviks party Vladimir Lenin returns to Russia by traveling covertly through Germany is a sealed train, then took a ferry to Sweden, then another train from Finland to Petrograd.

The July days were considered the point of no peaceful return during the Russian revolution. Workers and soldiers in Petrograd staged armed demonstrations against the current government, which resulted in a temporary decline in Bolshevik influence and the creation of a new Provisional Government headed by Aleksandr Kerensky.

led by Lenin's Bolshevik Party, this revolution was started due to mass criticism of the current government, which was led by a capitalist rich class. They occupied many government building in Petrograd and eventually succeeded in overthrowing the government, placing Lenin in charge of the country.

On the night of July 16 (and early morning of July 17) Tsar Nicolas Romanov and his immediate family: Wife Alexandra and their five children; Olga, Tatianna, Maria, Anastasia and Alexei, were executed via firing squad/bayoneted. For many years some believed Anastasia, one of their daughters, had survived, but she was never found, and the skeleton discovered years later could be either her or her brother, they were too similar in age to accurately distinguish who the skeleton was.
