  • The Pact, Pages 1-31

    In the middle of the night James gets a phonecall from the police about his son, Chris, being injured. James meets his wife, Gus, at the hospital to find Chris will be okay. Chris and his girlfriend, Emily, were taken to the hospital. Emily is announced dead when she arrives at the hospital and her parents, Melanie and Micheal, are devasted. Chris is alive so he is suspected of murdering Emily.

  • The Pact, Pages 32-59

    Chris is questioned by an investigator. He tells the investigator that he and Emily had planned to commit suicide together and it had just gone horribly wrong. Melanie and Michael plan a funeral for Emily. Melanie is taking her daughter's death very hard. So is Michael, but he's trying not to show it on the outside. Gus and Melanie had always been very good friends, but now not so much. Melanie believe Chris murdered Emily.

    Emily's funeral is held. Chris's little sister, Kate, accidentally tells him about it, and he expects to go. Gus doesn't let Chris attend the funereal. The investigator reviews Emily's autopsy report. In the report, it shows that the way the bullet that had killed Emliy went through her head suggests that someone else had shot her. Also, the report shows signs of struggling. The real shocker though is that Emily was pregnant!

    Gus tries to see Melanie, but Melanie doesn't want anything to do with her. James is named the best ophthamological doctor in a magazine. Chris is questioned again by detective Maroon. Gus takes Chris to Emily's grave.

    Chris starts seeing a physchyatrist, Dr. Feinstein. Chris's father feels Chris should start going back to school. Gus thinks this is poposturous, but Chris agrees. The school has a ceremony for Emily. They ask Chris to come up and speak. and he does. Chris doesn't say anything though, he just starts uncontrollably laughing and then runs out of the autoreum. Melanie starts recieving phone calls from someone asking for Emily.

    Chris is arrested and taken the county jail. He has a hearing and it is determined that he will be tried for murder in the first degree. The calls for Emily that Melanie had been recieving were from a jewely store informing her that Chris's watch was ready to be picked up.

    Chris is moved to the city jail. He doesn't have a cellmate, but he has a hard time with the other prisoners. One of them planted a cigarette in Chris's shoe and Chris had to go to isolation. Chris not ratting hector out made him a hero.

    Chris and his cellmate get moved into a nicer cell on a different level. Selena, who is working for Chris's case, talks with Michael to try and get him to testify in Chris's defense. Melanie is going crazy and burns Chris's sweatshirt that he gave to Emily and a diary Emily had kept from her and Chris's whole relationship.

    Michael comes to visit Chris. Michael doesn't think that Chris had murdered Emily. Michael and Gus also meet up and go out to eat. Chris finds out that Emily was pregnant and faints.

    Melanie discovers that Michael is planning to testify for Chris in court. She tries to seduce him into revealing as to why he would do this, but it doesn't work.

    Chris reveals to his mother that he had shot Emily. Chris's mother is completed bewildered by this statement. The next day when she is called to the stand, she is unable to testify for Chris they way she had rehersed. Chris requests that he is called to the stand, completely throwing off his lawyer.

    Chris is found not guilty of the murder of Emily Gold. The Golds move to another neighborhood and Chris is released from Jail.
