  • The First Programmable Computer

    The first programmable computer was made by Charles Babbage. It was the first mechanical computer and used switches and values in stead of eletricity, which was used in later years.
    In 1822 Babbage was fed up with the ceaseless labour and monotony of calculation required for scientific tables. Babbage pitched his idea of a machine that could end the use of mental calculation forever to The Royal Society who persuaded the British Government to fund Babbage's idea with a sum of £1500.

  • The First Computer Game

    There have been many arguments over what the first videa game is, but the earilest recorded one is the "Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device" invented by Thomas T.Goldsmith JR and Estle Ray Mann. The game was inspired by World War 2 radars. The aim of this game was to control missiles in order to hit targets.
    It was created by connecting a cathode ray tube oscilloscope and devising knobs which can follow the light traces which acted as the missiles.

    Ralph Baer created what he decribed as an interative TV game in 1951. It consisted of two player controlled dots chasing eachother around the screen, Later he was given funding and created a ping pong game.

    The Police National Computer (PNC) is a computer system used extensively by law enforcement organisations across the United Kingdom.
    It went live in 1974 and now consists of several databases available 24 hours a day, giving access to information of national and local significance.
  • Microsoft Launched

    Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft, the world largest software seller and one of the world's most valuable companies. In the mid 1980s Microsoft dominated the PC market.
    As of 2013 Microsoft is dominant in the PC market and the office suite markets. Mircrosoft has bought a range of companies including Skype, which was bought for $8.6billion. Microsoft has also created the massively popular game consoles xbox and xbox 360.

  • Sega Mega Drive Released

    The sega mega drive (otherwise known as Sega Genesis in the USA) was Sega's largests selling game console and was the Super Nintendo Entertainment System's majer competer, a battle that would dominate the 16-bit era of game consoles.
    Licensed 3rd party variations to the Mega Drive are still being produced and some indie-game developers still create games for the console.

    The 1998 Data Protection Act was passed by Parliament to control the way information is handled and to give legal rights to people who have information stored about them.
