Establishment of fur trading in the region set up a variety of
conflicting territorial claims by European powers and the United States. These conflicts led to several treaties, including the Treaty of 1818 that set up a "joint occupation" between the United States and the British over the region. -
Starting in 1841 people used The Oregon Trail ,a 2,000-mile (3,200 km) historic east-west wagon route, connecting the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon and locations in between to go and claim land in new western land. This caused a foold of settlers and a huge increase in population.

In 1846, the Oregon boundary dispute between the U.S. and Britain was settled with the signing of the Oregon Treaty. The British gained sole possession of the land north of the 49th parallel and all of Vancouver Island, with the United States receiving the territory south of that line.

August 14, 1848, until February 14, 1859 was the time Oregan was nothing more than land up for grabs between seperate countries. As a territory it emcompassed Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, as well as parts of Wyoming and Montana.

As news of the Whitman massacre reached the United States Congress it helped speed the organization of the region into a U.S. territory. Finally August 14, 1848, Congress passed the Act to Establish the Territorial Government of Oregon, which created what was officially the Territory of Oregon.

On February 14, 1859, the territory entered the Union as the U.S. state of Oregon within its current boundaries. The remaining eastern portion of the territory (the portions in present-day southern Idaho and western Wyoming) was added to the Washington Territory.

The Christmas flood of 1964 was a major flood that took place in the Pacific Northwest of the United States between December 18, 1964 and January 7, 1965, spanning the Christmas holiday. In Oregon seventeen people died as a result of the disaster, and it caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. The flooding covered 152,789 acres (61,831.5 ha).
