  • The Triple Alliance is formed

    Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy formed the Triple Alliance out of fear they would be attacked by France or Russia
  • The Triple Entente

    With the German empire growing, France believed they could be a threat same with Britain. So they signed an agreement called the Entente Cordiale. Three years later Russia had decided to join them.
  • Assassination of Franz

    Assassination of Franz

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was on a official visit to the Bosnian capital of Saravejo. He was there to inspect the imperial army in Bosnia and Herzegovina which was annexed by Austria-Hungary. This angered the Serbian nationalist who thought that land belonged to Serbia. So the nationalist group The Black Hand hatched a plan to murder him on his visit
  • The first Canadians in WW1

    The first Canadians to arrive to the war were called Princess Patricia’s Canadian light infantry
  • Manitoba Women

    A petition made to get women the right to vote gained some traction and had gotten over 40,000 signatures. This was followed by the lieutenant Governor passing into law the right of Manitoba women to vote
  • The Second Battle of Ypres

    The Germans start their attack by firing over 150 tons of toxic chlorine gas across the western front. The targets were two French colonial divisions in Ypres Belgium. Shortly after they followed it by storming the allies trenches, but the allies defended well enough to keep their positions.
  • The Battle of The Somme

    The Battle of The Somme

    British and French forces prepare to attack the Germans on the western front on both sides of the upper reaches of the Somme River in France. After four months of tragic warfare the allies did not cover much ground but, it gave good experience to the soldiers who had survived it and they stopped the Germans from entering France.
  • Conscription Crisis

    Conscription was passed into law because voluntary recruitment failed to keep troop numbers. Not everyone in Canada believed they should fight a war they don’t agree with. But it was quite the opposite for prime minister Borden he believed that the people of Canada should have patriotically fought for their country no questions asked
  • The Khaki Election

    The Khaki election played a big part in conscription being passed into law. Sir Robert Borden believed that if he gave the soldiers at war a way to vote that he would gain an upper hand in the election
  • Russian Revolution

    The Russian revolution ended the Romanov dynasty and with it the imperial rule. Which would later lead to the communist party being formed.
  • The Battle at Vimy Ridge

    The Battle at Vimy Ridge

    The outcome of this battle was heavily due to Canada’s contributions. One of the Canadian divisions was ordered to capture Vimy Ridge in northern France, it was heavily guarded the French had lost more than 100,000 men in their attempts to capture Vimy ridge
  • Income tax in Canada

    Sir Robert Borden the prime minister at the time introduced income tax because Canada alone had spent 600 million dollars on the war.
