  • Chinese Nationalists oust the last Qing emperor, Puyi

    Among some of the groups pushing for nationalization and modernization the Kuomintang was one of the great groups. In 1911, The Revolutionary Alliance, part of the Kuomintang overthrew the last Qing emperor, Henry PuYi. PuYi and his ansecstors had been ruling CHina since 1644.
  • World War I begins as Austria declares war of Serbia

    Austro Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife went to visit the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo. Upon arriving the couple was shot in an open car by Gavrilo Princip who was part of the Serbian group the Black Hand. Because of this incident, Austria gave Serbia an ultimatum containing demands. However Serbia was unable to fulfill a task so Austria decalres war on Serbial This was the start of WWI.
  • U.S. Enters the war

    In 1917 Germany announced that they were bringing back the policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. (German U-Boats had sank 3 American ships). Next Germany sent a telegram to Mexico saying they would help Mexico reconquer lands they had lost to the U.S. At this point the U.S had no choice but to join war. So on April 2,1917 the US entered the war onto the Allies side.
  • Armistice signed as Allies defeat Central Powers

    After the second battle of the marne, many of the central powers began to collapse. On November 9, 1918 Kaiswer Wilhelm II stepped down as leader of Germany and the nation became a republic. Representatives from Germany and France met and signed an armistice to stop fighting.
  • Gandhi leads Indian camapaign of civil disobedience

    After the Amritsar attack, Gandhi began to emerge as teh leader of independence for India. He had a very religous approach to political activity. He called for the Indinan National Congress to follow civil disobedience: the deliberate and public refusal to obey an unjust law and nonviolence as the means to achieve independence. Ghandhi would help lead boycotts against the British by weaving his own cloth and making his own salt.
  • Mustafa Kemal transforms Turkey into Republic

    When the Greeks invaded Turkey, the brilliant commander Mustafa Kemal helps lead the nationalists in winning back the nation and overthrowing the Ottomans. He then becames the first president of Turkey and the "father of the Turks."
  • MaoZedong heads Long March

    As the Communist party realized they had been defeated, 100,000 Communists fled and went on the journey called the Long March (6,000 miles long!). Thousands died however eventually Mao and his followers ended up in the caves in northwestern China.
